Attaining success and happiness isn’t really as hard as it sounds. If personal and professional happiness and/or success has been eluding you, you’ll be happy to hear it’s not as hard to capture as it may appear. My name is Scott Turcotte and I’m a NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach, and Life Coach at Balanced Health Wellness Consulting. In this introductory blog I’ll outline a little bit about myself, my philosophy on coaching, and how taking the important steps to take control of your life is easier than you think.
A little bit about me
Looking back at my personal and professional life to date I see a person who, like all of us, has experienced success and failure, good times and bad, satisfaction and regret. I started my professional life in a career that was lacking many of the intrinsic rewards I, and many of us, thrive on. I simply wasn’t happy and knew things had to change.
Changing careers is a scary endeavor, but after looking at my strengths and weaknesses and evaluating what it was I wanted out of life, I felt more confident that what needed to be done, could be. I realized at that time that being a teacher fit the bill. Being an educator allowed me to use my strengths as a communicator and public speaker as well as my patience as an instructor to help others. This would give me the intrinsic value that simply didn’t exist in my previous profession.
I can say with 100% certainty that it was the right decision. There’s nothing more satisfying in life than helping others overcome obstacles (real or perceived) and helping them find success. I’ve witnessed students overcome these obstacles realizing they had the ability all along, they simply needed the motivation, a little coaching and some self-confidence. The latter of which was achieved through the first two. I use these same strengths to help clients in their pursuit of being healthier and more physically fit as a personal trainer as well as helping them achieve their personal and professional goals as a life coach!
I’m also a father, husband, son and brother. I have a passion for sports as a former athlete (ice hockey and baseball) and coach. I’ve coached at all levels from division 1 high school down to youth development programs. I love to work out, snowboard, hike and go camping with my wife and daughters.
That’s a little bit about me, I can’t wait to hear about you!
My philosophy on coaching
I believe we’re all capable of great things. I also believe that we have the ability to control our own destiny, including our own happiness and success. How you may ask and if it’s that simple why doesn’t everybody do it? To be completely honest, millions of people DO, we’re simply too immersed in our own lives, to notice. Here’s the catch, controlling your own destiny takes time, commitment and work. Good things do not happen overnight and they don’t happen on their own. I didn’t find happiness in my profession by simply wishing it into existence. I realized a change needed to be made, assessed my strengths and weaknesses, made a plan, set goals and put those plans into action until my goals were my new reality.
Ultimately that’s what life coaching is about, helping individuals navigate through obstacles in their lives, obstacles that act as barriers to their personal and professional success. These obstacles can be physical in nature or they can be a mindset (or sometimes both). I cannot make the changes for my coachees, after all, how much they accomplish is a result of how committed they are to making the change and the work they put in. I can, however, help them evaluate, set goals, provide strategies, motivate, and ultimately help them hold themselves accountable. My philosophy is simple and straightforward. I use an collaborative, reflective, understanding and empathetic but realistic and accountable approach to my coaching. These are the keys to a successful life coaching relationship.
My areas of focus are…
- personal training & overall physical fitness
- nutrition coaching
- planning & organization
- time management
- communication
- executive functioning
- student athlete mentoring
