What is life coaching?
You may have heard the term “life coach” on tv or the web, but what exactly is a life coach and do you need one? In short, a life coach guides or “coaches” their client or “coachee” through challenges they may be experiencing their life, be it personal or professional, and helps them achieve their desired goals or help them find purpose in life.
The important part of the coach/client relationship is one of both honesty and trust. The client has to be honest with themselves and their coach about their struggles and what they would like to accomplish if they really desire change. The client must also trust that their coach will competently guide them through the journey, giving them the skills they need to be able to independently face future challenges. The key is to identify specific challenges in ones personal or professional life they wish or need to improve upon, create a series of SMART goals that are designed to get them there in a specific timeframe and to be held accountable along the way.
What are SMART goals? SMART goals are popular in the education field and are used all the time by teachers for themselves as well as for their students to measure growth.
SMART goals are goals that are…
Specific (what exactly is it that you’re trying to achieve?)
Measurable (how will you know when you’ve achieved your goal(s)?)
Attainable (is your goal realistic?)
Relevant (does your goal contribute to your growth as an individual or employee?)
Time-bound (when do you wish to achieve your set goal by?)
SMART goals are great when it comes to tackling issues that are intended to contribute to personal growth because they help to prevent the individual from becoming overwhelmed by the entire process from beginning to end.
How can life coaching help me?
Life coaching is very individualized and is not only for those who are struggling. Many highly functioning and successful people benefit from having a life coach. For example, it’s a fact that some of highest paid and most successful athletes employ sports therapists. They don’t do so because they’re unable to function on a daily basis or struggle with aspects of their skillset, although some certainly do, they use sports therapists as a tool or resource to help with the stressors of being a professional athlete and to help them better navigate those waters.
Employing a life coach is great for anybody who is looking to improve upon any aspect of their life. Just a few examples of how life coaching can help include, but are not limited to…
- productivity and focus at home or at work
- time management
- executive functioning
- stress mitigation
- communication
- self-confidence
- physical, mental and emotional health
- prioritization
- physical fitness
- wellness goals and more
What benefits will I see?
Life coaching is beneficial in so many ways, that is, IF the client is honest with themselves and their coach, consistently reflects upon their journey and is committed to making the required changes. While you certainly get out what you put in, someone who is committed to the journey can expect to see…
- Increased confidence, focus and productivity
- Decreased stress as a result of better time management and prioritization
- A growth mindset that can be used in all areas of their life
- Improved executive functioning skills and behaviors
- Improved communication skills which, in turn, can lead to improved relationships with those who they previously struggled
- Better mental, physical and emotional well-being
- Improved academic performance
